Course description

Upon successful completion of the BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science and Management Programme, students should be able to:

Describe the general biological and chemical principles appropriate to the study of environmental topics, including global environmental phenomena, environmental microbiology, ecology, toxicology and pollution.

  • Analyze, synthesize and summarize environmental data and information.
  • Critically evaluate data and information from a range of multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary perspectives, including environmental law, environmental economics, environmental policies and ethics.


Competently perform a wide range of technical skills in environmental measurement and analysis, conservation and resource management, pollution control, waste treatment, impact assessment and quality management.

  • Collect, record, analyze and interpret data, and test hypotheses.
  • Elaborate upon experimental data, define problems, devise and evaluate possible solutions and suggest further lines of investigation which may be necessary.
  • Plan, execute and present an independent piece of research work, in which qualities such as time management, problem solving and independence are evident.


Critically evaluate experiments in the Environmental Sciences as reported in the literature and communicate these evaluations effectively.


  • Access, assess and critically evaluate scientific information from a variety of sources.
  • Communicate principles of Environmental Sciences both orally and in writing in a way that is well organized, topical and recognizes the limits of the hypotheses involved.
  • Develop strategies for updating, maintaining and enhancing knowledge in environmental sciences through life-long learning.


Identify, comprehend and reflect upon the responsibility of environmental scientists in society, with particular emphasis on the protection of the living environment, and application of the principles of sustainable development and “green” production.


  • Recognize and apply the legal, economic and social aspects of environmental management, in order to become versatile and effective environmental managers.
  • Recognize the moral and ethical dimensions of environmental investigations, and the need to adhere to professional codes of conduct.
  • Comprehend ethical and social issues in environmental sciences, and their impacts upon society.

Previous Qualifications GCE Advanced Level or Burmese applicants will be considered case-by-case.
