Description:

  • A full tuition scholarship for 4 years of study leading to a Bachelor’s degree from DePauw University

  • DePauw University is a private, coeducational, residential, undergraduate College of Liberal Arts and School of Music located in Greencastle, Indiana, USA.

  • Cetana Educational Foundation will cover all other expenses — room, board, medical insurance, student fees, books, and a small living stipend.

  • Study to commence August 2009; graduation expected by May 2013.

  • DePauw is among the top 40 Liberal Arts colleges in the U.S. and offers a wide range of majors, among them Anthropology, Education, English, History, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Biochemistry, and Biology.

  • DePauw also includes Asian Studies and the Chinese language among its majors and encourages all students to spend one semester studying abroad.

  • An undergraduate in a Liberal Arts program chooses a major and minor field of study for four years, and also takes one or more required subjects each year outside of those fields.

  • With a student:faculty ratio of 10:1 and a total enrollment of just 2,400 students, DePauw provides great personal attention to all students.

 

Eligibility and Restrictions:

Guidelines for the choice of scholars:

  • Possess at least a high school diploma
  • Scholars from all religious and ethnic groups in Myanmar are eligible for scholarships.
  • Scholars pledge to return to Myanmar for a period of at least three years after they complete their studies, so that they can share their new knowledge and experience.
  • Applicant is a current resident of Myanmar.
  • Applicant’s chosen area of study is useful in developing social services or human resources within Myanmar on return.
  • Applicant has shown distinction in undergraduate studies.
  • Applicant has no political affiliation.
  • Applicant has demonstrated, prior to application, leadership in activities that benefit others.
  • Applicant has a good facility in English, demonstrated by a TOEFL score of at least 525 (paper; 197 computer) or an IELTS score of at least 5.5, and through a short essay that is part of the application.
  • Applicant possesses some working experience in Myanmar that is relevant to the area of study.
  • Applicant should have been accepted in school of choice and should submit letter of acceptance with application.
  • After acceptance as a Cetana Scholar, the applicant must pass his/her own medical examination satisfactorily and must be certified as medically fit.
  • Applicant’s family should assist in costs of study where appropriate (e.g., passport, visa, medical exam, clothing).
  • Priority will be given to applicants for M.A. programs, to applicants who are 40 years of age or less, and to applicants for whom Cetana can share costs with other institutions and organizations. Applicants may be from any religious or ethnic group—Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, or Christian. Rotation among ethnic groups is practiced.
  • Cetana Scholars will sign a pledge to return to Myanmar for a minimum of three years after completion of courses and two persons will sign as guarantors.

  • Qualified applicants will be interviewed by Cetana’s Screening Committee (and possibly a Cetana representative as well) in Yangon before 30 October 2008.

  • The selected candidate will work with a Cetana/DePauw representative to prepare an application to DePauw.

  • The Cetana/DePauw representative will submit the application to DePauw on behalf of the candidate.

  • Candidate will be notified of acceptance no later than 30 April 2009.

  • Scholar should plan to arrive at DePauw in mid-August for student orientation; classes begin on 23 August 2009.

  • Documents showing your work at a high school or its equivalent; also any university transcripts

  • References from teachers

  • TOEFL and SAT 1 scores (or have the test dates scheduled)
