Introduction

The Asian University for Women (AUW) has been designed to be catalytic, transforming societies and the situation of women through the knowledge, ability, innovation and leadership of its graduates. The vision of the Asian University for Women is to be a world-class institution of higher education dedicated to preparing talented Asian women for leadership in the political, economic, social and cultural spheres. The AUW is based in Bangladesh and opened in early 2008. All classes are taught in English. It offers a five-year program leading to a combined Bachelor's and Graduate degree, drawing on the best international and regional models of teaching and learning and a faculty recruited from throughout the region and the world. The AUW curriculum stresses economic, scientific and technological, social and political development in its undergraduate and graduate programs; and provides a liberal education that cultivates a sense of critical inquiry, tolerance and mutual respect.

The University recruits students from across South Asia, Southeast Asia and Southwest Asia. It has a special relevance for young women whose families would prefer them to attend a single sex institution, and who wish them to be prepared to make important contributions to their societies. By bringing women together across national, cultural, ethnic, linguistic and economic boundaries, the university helps to nurture a network of women professionals who will drive the development and enrichment of their communities, countries and the region. These women will have the practical skills and wisdom to work across borders and societies.

When fully enrolled, the University will have a student body of 2,500. Rather than graduating large numbers of students, AUW's focus is on providing an education of exceptional quality to cultivate women leaders who will have a significant impact on their societies. The university contributes to the advancement of equal educational opportunity in Asia by providing a world-class institution in which women of all backgrounds can achieve - and demonstrate - their academic and leadership potential. And it contributes to the advancement of the region by bringing a continuing infusion of leadership capacity into key sectors of the workforce. 25% of the student body will be recruited from Bangladesh. Other primary target areas for student recruitment will be: Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Laos, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.
